The basic tanker, the KC135, (pictured
here in a phase inspection)
is scheduled for replacement by KC-10's.
The hangar for the 128th Air
Refueling Group ANG based at Mitchell International
Airport is a unique structure in both looks and
function.
The 195'-0" x 42'-8"
opening is covered by an eight leaf bi-parting door
system. A special 20' x 20' tail door allows for
accommodation of a variety of aircraft (propeller to
KC-10's).
Consequently, the distinctive
exterior hangar configuration is the result of
deliberate pre-planning. Addressing a series of
specific problems such as: limited space for
facilities (premium land costs), energy efficiencies
and new construction vs. remodeling. The end result
is a blueprint for future military hangars.
Aesthetics and utility are synonomous in this
exemplary facility.
